Uig Lodge

Built in 1876 by Sir James Matheson, Lord Leverhulme later purchased the Lodge and gave it to his niece as a wedding present. Let mainly as a sporting lodge it is also available for family and large group holidays and makes an ideal location for those with a love of the sea and open spaces.

It is an inspiring building which everyone who visits the area remembers. Among many famous people who have stayed here is Arthur Ransome, the world-renowned author of the Swallows and Amazons children's books (see panels)

Great Northern
The landscape of this area inspired Arthur Ransome for the setting of his book 'Great Northern' (the story of children protecting eggs of the great northern diver).
Great Northern
The Castle of the Gaels was based on Uig Lodge where he stayed in 1945 and 1946 whilst researching Great Northern.
